Buttercreams: A Guide

There are so many choices to choose from when it comes to buttercream types and I am here to help you pick the one that you will love for your dessert.

Italian and Swiss Meringue

These two buttercreams are light, creamy, and have just the right amount of sweetness. They are both cooked with egg whites, sugar, and butter. Don’t worry though, the egg whites have been completely cooked through! These buttercreams are a go-to for my desserts because they are easy to pipe with and great for flavoring.

The difference between the two is the method to make them. Italian Meringue uses a sugar syrup to slowly cook the egg whites while the Swiss Meringue uses cooks the egg and sugar over a stove before whipping. THe end resluts, however, are very similar. Swiss tends to have a more silkier texture with some shine to it, while Italian is a little sweeter with a denser texture.

American Buttercream

American Buttercream is a very classic topping, it is simple and sweet. The base is made of butter, powdered sugar, milk, and some flavoring. This buttercream tends to be heavier and much sweeter than the Meringue Buttercreams, but taste just as good. It also falvors very well and can hold vibrant shades of color.
